Exercitatus is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Pasteurellaceae. It was first described in 2023 following the taxonomic reclassification of bacterial strains previously grouped within Bisgaard taxa 6 and 10.1
Etymology
The name Exercitatus derives from the Latin word meaning "trained" or "disciplined", referring metaphorically to the careful, systematic classification process involved in defining this genus.1
Characteristics
Members of the genus Exercitatus exhibit the following traits:1
- Gram-negative
- Facultatively anaerobic
- Non-motile
- Rod-shaped or pleomorphic
- Oxidase-positive
- Catalase-positive
- Grow on blood agar, forming small, non-haemolytic colonies
Habitat and isolation
Bacteria belonging to the genus Exercitatus have been isolated predominantly from birds, notably from respiratory tract samples. Prior to their formal description, these bacteria were referred to as Bisgaard taxa 6 and 10.1
Taxonomy
The type species of the genus is Exercitatus varius.1
