Benee

Stella Rose Bennett, known professionally as Benee and formerly Bene, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter from Auckland. In both 2019 and 2020, she consecutively won Single of the Year, Best Solo Artist and Best Pop Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Benee initially gained local prominence with her singles "Glitter" and "Soaked", before her 2019 single "Supalonely" saw international popularity following its success on the video-sharing platforms TikTok and YouTube. Benee subsequently released her debut album, Hey U X, in November 2020; her second, Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles, came out five years later.

Stella Rose Bennett (born 30 January 2000), known professionally as Benee (stylised in all caps; pronounced /ˈbɛn/1) and formerly Bene,2 is a New Zealand singer and songwriter from Auckland. In both 2019 and 2020, she consecutively won Single of the Year, Best Solo Artist and Best Pop Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Benee initially gained local prominence with her singles "Glitter" and "Soaked", before her 2019 single "Supalonely" saw international popularity following its success on the video-sharing platforms TikTok and YouTube. Benee subsequently released her debut album, Hey U X, in November 2020; her second, Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles, came out five years later.

Under the moniker of "Bene", she made her solo debut with the 2017 single "Tough Guy", before later gaining prominence with her 2018 single "Soaked", which has been certified double-platinum in New Zealand. She released her debut EP, Fire on Marzz, with help from producer Josh Fountain in June 2019. Her second EP, Stella & Steve, was released in November 2019 and charted in the US, Canada and France as a result of the international success of the EP's final single, "Supalonely". Since 2018, Benee has earned seven entries on the Triple J Hottest 100, three of which were in the 2019 list. She released her third EP, Lychee, in March 2022, which charted at number 13 on the Official New Zealand Music Chart.

Life and career

2000–2022: Early life and career beginnings

Stella Rose Bennett3 was born on 30 January 200045 and raised in the suburb of Grey Lynn in Auckland6 on the catalogs of Radiohead, Björk and Groove Armada.789 She attended St Mary's College, an all girls Catholic school where music was compulsory for four years,58 before working as a dishwasher and a pizza cook;10 an attempt at a communications degree at the Auckland University of Technology was aborted after a meltdown less than two weeks in.111 She took up the saxophone aged eight and the guitar in primary school, though briefly dropped music in favour of water polo,1213 after which she began producing music aged 17.14

Benee's first works were uploaded to SoundCloud under her previous nickname Bene151 and caught the attention of producer Josh Fountain. The pair worked together on both her 2017 debut single "Tough Guy" and her September 2018 single "Soaked",15416 the latter of which charted at No. 58 on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2018.17 She signed to Republic Records following "Soaked"'s release1819 and supported Lily Allen at a February 2019 Auckland show during her No Shame Tour.20 Between May and June, she released the singles "Evil Spider"18 and "Want Me Back"21 and the EP Fire on Marzz.22 She promoted the last of these by releasing a music video for EP track "Glitter"23 and changed her name to Benee around this time.22 Fire on Marzz earned Benee the award for Best Solo Artist at the 2019 New Zealand Music Awards in November 2019, where she also won awards for Single of the Year with "Soaked", Best Breakthrough Artist and Best Pop Artist.16 Fire on Marzz tracks "Glitter", "Find an Island", and "Evil Spider" each appeared in the 2019 Triple J Hottest 100 at 19, 25 and 51 respectively.24

Following the release of November 2019's Stella & Steve,19 "Glitter" and Stella & Steve track "Supalonely" went viral after spawning dance challenges on TikTok;2627 the former won the 2020 APRA Silver Scroll Award.28 "Supalonely", which featured Gus Dapperton, once received seven billion plays on TikTok in a single month29 and made the top 40 on charts around the world,30 including at numbers 18 and 39 in the UK and the US.31 She performed the track on the American talk shows The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Late Night with Seth Meyers,323334 though a booked headlining North American tour with support from American singer Remi Wolf was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.3536 In July 2020, she released the single "Night Garden" featuring American producer Kenny Beats and British musician Bakar37 and became her country's first Apple Music's Up Next artist of the month.38 She then released the single "Snail", a track inspired by the behaviour of a type of mollusc she had observed during her time locked down by COVID-19,39 and featured on "Afterthought", a track on Joji's second studio album Nectar.40

In October 2020, Benee was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2020 People's Choice Awards,41 formed the vanity label Olive Records and signed Raglan reggae musician Muroki to it,42 and released the single "Plain" featuring Lily Allen and Flo Milli.43

On 15 October 2020, Benee announced her debut album, Hey U X, which was released on 13 November 2020.44 She had prior noted that it would differ musically from her previous releases.4546 She also won Best New Zealand Act at the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards,47 where she was also nominated for Best New Act and Best Push Act.48 On 13 November 2020, Hey U X was released, as was a music video for "Kool", which served as its fourth single.49 She subsequently won Single of the Year (for "Supalonely"), Best Solo Artist and Best Pop Artist for the second consecutive year at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards.50 Shortly after, her manager of four years, Paul McKessar, handed back his Aotearoa Music Award for Manager of the Year after allegations of his sexual misconduct became public.51 She announced and then rescheduled a regional tour in Aotearoa aka New Zealand in 2021 to 2022.52 In 2022 she announced her first World Tour.53

2022–present: Lychee & Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles

On 4 February 2022, Benee announced the release of her EP Lychee and released the second single "Beach Boy",54 which she originally teased on her official Discord server on 25 January 2022.55 On 25 March 2022, she featured on Triple J's segment Like a Version, where she covered American singer Ariana Grande's song "God Is a Woman", alongside a performance of her song "Never Ending".56 She would also release many collaborative tracks in 2022, including with Deaton Chris Anthony, "Good Buy My Old Life",57 as well as Easy Life with "OTT",5859 "I'm So Happy" with Jeremy Zucker60 and a remix of "Lots Of Nothing" with Spacey Jane.6162

Early 2023, February, would see Benee release the first single from her upcoming sophomore album, "Green Honda",63 and would also lead to her debut performance at the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2023.6465 She would also release a track with previous collaborator Gus Dapperton with "Don't Let Me Down", appearing on his 2023 album, Henge.66 In May 2023 she released "Bagels", with mental health charity Youthline.67 In June she released a song with Australian artist Mallrat called "Do It Again", the official song of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.6869

In March 2024, it was announced that Benee would be joining Wallows on their North American tour.70 In May 2024, it was announced that she would be joining Olivia Rodrigo on the Australian leg of her Guts World Tour,71 as well as co-writing NewJeans' single "How Sweet," which was released the same month.72 In the summer, "Sad Boiii", the second single from her upcoming sophomore album was released,73 followed by "Animal" in November, a song about how "insignificant and small we are compared to the universe".74 The latter was also accompanied by the announcement that she would be joining Tate McRae on the UK and Europe leg of her Miss Possessive Tour.75

In March 2025, Benee released "Zero To Hero" as part of the A Minecraft Movie soundtrack.76 She would then begin to tease a new song, "Off The Rails" on TikTok which she had been performing during Tate McRae's tour, and it was released on 20 June 2025.77 The track was produced by ELVIRA and Luka Kloser78 who had worked with Benee before on her 2023 single "Green Honda".79 Benee would then announce the fourth single "Cinnamon" on 27 August 20258081 along with the announcement of the album, Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles.8283 The final single, "Underwater," would be released on 3 October 2025.84 Benee described the album as "her most personal work yet" and touring with Olivia Rodrigo and Tate McRae "really inspired her" to play shows in arenas.85 Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles would then be released on 7 November 2025,86 followed by a North American tour announcement87 and the fact that PinkPantheress features on the track "Princess."88 She also hinted at a New Zealand and Australia Tour in an interview with Rolling Stone Australia.89

In February 2026, Role Model brought Benee out on stage at Laneway Festival in Auckland as his 'Sally,' a reference to the subject of his song "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out", a role that Charli XCX had previously taken part in.90 The pair had previously worked together on the song "Notice Me,"91 which features on his 2019 EP, Oh, How Perfect.92 In April, Benee was nominated at the Aotearoa Music Awards for Best New Artist,9394 increasing her record as the artist with the most nominations for that award. She was also nominated for the People's Choice award.95

Personal life

In an interview for The New Zealand Herald, Benee revealed that she has dyslexia2 and was also diagnosed with OCD in 2021.29
