Current state of geostub cleanup
As someone who commented in the relevant RFC and has an interest in improving coverage of obscure little villages (when they turn out to actually be villages), is there some big list of which regions of the world have been checked so far and which remain to be checked with regards to potentially dubious "populated place" entries? Is there a list of users who have been doing significant work in this area or centralised discussion hub? I will add that the Welsh "village" substub creations of Wici Rhuthun 1 need to be gone over if you all aren't already aware of it. Thanks, Passengerpigeon (talk) 01:43, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
- As far as know, there is not. There are several US states which have been done at least once: Arizona, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, N and S Dakota. We never finished California; there are other states which were partly done. As far as whole nations, maybe Iran? I know we never finished Somalia. At the moment I'm the only who appears to be working systematically (on Indiana); I can think of four other people who have done some systematic work. Mangoe (talk) 22:06, 4 December 2025 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2025).

- Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account associated with their edits.
- Administrators will now find that Special:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start). T382958
- The December 2025 administrator elections are scheduled from Nov 25 – Dec 15.
- An Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in December 2025, with over 1,000 drafts awaiting review from the past two months. In addition to AfC participants, all administrators and new page patrollers can help review using the Yet Another AFC Helper Script, which can be enabled in the Gadgets settings. Administrators' newsletter – January 2026
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2025).
- All general sanctions imposed by the community may now be enforced at the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard (WP:AE) as a result of a recent RfC.
- Due to the result of a recent RFC, the administrator recall process is amended to extend the deadline for a re-request for adminship to 30 days or the next administrator election, whichever is later.
- Changes to the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy's disclosure rules include broadening the consecutive-blocks exception to cover all admin actions and removing the requirement to revision-delete permissible disclosures once they become unnecessary (instead requiring only their removal). See WP:TAIVDISCLOSE for more information.
- Following the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: Aoidh, Asilvering, Girth Summit, Guerillero, HJ Mitchell, HouseBlaster, Izno, Sdrqaz, SilverLocust.
- The arbitration case Pbsouthwood has been suspended.

Hi FOARP. Thank you for your work on Mr. Stress. Another editor, 11WB, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
I fixed a cite error, article is fine otherwise.
To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|11WB}}. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

- Thanks @11WB! FOARP (talk) 13:49, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- Oh! I didn't see that this was one of your articles @FOARP! I wouldn't have left feedback otherwise, as I have a personal rule not to advise administrators. Have you considered applying for or self-assigning the Autopatrolled permission to your account yet? 11WB (talk) 13:52, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- Personally I like having other eyes on my articles because they're far from perfect. If you think it's a drag on reviewers I can add it though. FOARP (talk) 13:54, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- The new pages feed doesn't show any other articles waiting to be reviewed, so that's completely up to you! You pass the 25 article minimum criteria and you have 2 GAs. Recent articles look fine! If I were able to assign the permission, I would have no issue with applying it! AP is pretty safe anyway, as it gives the ability to unreview, so that a reviewer can then take a look! 11WB (talk) 13:58, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- TBH I thought I already had autopatrolled. But yeah, sure, if it's going to be an issue. FOARP (talk) 15:01, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Airport destination lists sourcing RfC
Hi there,
I'm leaving this message because you contributed to the recent RfC regarding the inclusion of airport destination lists. As promised, now that that RfC has closed, I've initiated a further discussion about the sourcing standards to be applied to these lists.
If you wish to contribute to the discussion, please do so at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Airport destination lists - sourcing requirements.
Cheers! Danners430 tweaks made 15:16, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Mr. Stress when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. You can look at the documentation for the template you are using but it is also helpful to use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and ensure that the values you have added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show you what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions, contact the help desk for assistance.
Thank you. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:22, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
Regarding your edit here
AFAIK, you based your evidence in ARBPIA 5 totally on User:BilledMammal/ARBPIA RM statistics. (Did you note any diffs in your evidence that weren't given in BM's table? Did you check that AndreJustAndre never voted?) I have outlined some of the problems in using BM's material here: User_talk:Guerillero#As_requested, cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:56, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- No, I collected it myself, not using BM's statistics - I hadn't even seen his submissions when I entered my evidence and still have not actually read them in detail so I have no idea whether I did or did not include any diffs that he did not: but since you are the one raising this unfounded accusation, maybe you should actually check? Or indeed should have checked before making these accusations?
- I had noticed the "Massacre"/"Not Massacre" issue long before, whilst closing RMs.
- Asilvering hasn't allowed me to respond to you accusations in the discussion, so perhaps, in fairness, you should just strike your original accusation? FOARP (talk) 22:03, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

"punctuation, grammer, and spelling"
I am happy to say that. FOARP (talk) 14:46, 25 February 2026 (UTC)- Then why reply to me with it, if it's not about me or anything I said it has no relevance to our discussion. We were not discusing ridged mind sets, were discussing my rejection of your edits. Can you really not see how that looks? Slatersteven (talk) 14:50, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

- I think only you can answer whether you think that is a fair or unfair appreciation of your editing. If you would really like me to list the discussions this is based on I can do that, but I don't want to engage in what might be an overly-personal discussion for you unless you want me to. NPA is clear, and saying "AHH but I did not say YOU" is not a get out, either make an accusation or stop insinuating, my last word, it is now a warning, Slatersteven (talk) 15:27, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Steve, to say that RUSUKR is an area with dug-in partisans is hardly a controversial statement - it's the entire reason why it is a CTOP - nor is it "insinuating" anything to say so.
- I recommend opening an ANI discussion because I cannot for the life of me work out what it is you are actually asking for at this point. I gave you the statement you appeared to be asking for - that you did actually allow edits for punctuation grammer and spelling - but that was not enough. Perhaps you will get whatever it is there? Administrators' newsletter – May 2026
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2026).

Interface administrator changes
- Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
- The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).
- The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
- The May 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions close on May 10.
- A new noticeboard for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions.
CS1 error on Hokey Cokey
Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Hokey Cokey, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:
- A dates error. References show this error when one of the date-containing parameters is incorrectly formatted. Please edit the article to correct the date and ensure it is formatted to follow the Wikipedia Manual of Style's guidance on dates. (Fix | Ask for help)
Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 21:26, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

The article The Anniston Star has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No significant coverage from reliable secondary sources available. Without this, notability for this newspaper cannot be established. H. Brandt Ayers controversy exists in that article already.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.
If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the article at any time. Matthew Yeager (talk) 08:00, 24 May 2026 (UTC)

Iranian "village" articles
I replied at Wikipedia:Request a query#Unimproved Iranian "village" articles and should probably have pinged you. I'm an inclusionist but it does seem that Wikipedia could survive without a page on each rural house in Iran, Russia and elsewhere. I can list Russian cases if it's helpful. Delinking deleted items
Hi FORAP -
I noticed that when you closed a string of adabi AfDs a few weeks ago, you just delinked them from some of the lists instead of deleting entirely (example). I've come across a few other admins with the same issue, it seems to either be a problem with XFDCloser not recognizing certain types of list entries of a matter of clicking the "remove" instead of "unlink" button. As a non-admin I can't offer much more insight than that, but hopefully there's an easy solution. I did fix all of the ones that I found. Thanks! –dlthewave ☎ 20:08, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
I have effing had it
I am sick to death of arguing about the damnable guidelines. Necrothesp's bald-faced denial of the problem is pretty much the nail in the coffin of me bothering to interact with them. It's just eating up my time and really making me want to give up on the whole effort. So GEOLAND is about to go off my watchlist. Sorry to abandon you but it's too much of a time sink producing nothing but frustration.
A proud deletionist, Mangoe (talk) 01:33, 26 June 2026 (UTC)
- I know. This present round of this discussion has now been ongoing since October last year. Frankly I dip in and out of the discussion to avoid becoming frustrated by it, and don't watchlist any talk page for the same reason.
- But I think people are aware that the present situation just isn't tolerable. There's zero pushback for eliminating CS46's nonsensical "village" articles, for example.
- I know once the RFC goes live some people are going to, "more in sorrow than in anger", find that they just can't support it because of some wording issues or whatever, even though they would really like to be able to, honest. But the fact that they had to at least seem like they were going along with things does at least mean we shouldn't get too many
"'Bad RFC - no BEFORERFC was done"
votes or attempts to derail the whole thing by putting a moratorium on even discussing the issue at all. - Yes, stating that the guideline hasn't led to the creation of thousands of pointless articles is just deluded, but they are not the audience we need to convince anyway. FOARP (talk) 09:16, 26 June 2026 (UTC)
- Well, trying to convince the uninvolved has generally run up against ignorance of the history of dealing with the consequences of the current text, and it seems to me that the usual response is to say that we're exaggerating how bad things are and other DIDNTHEARTHAT replies. Mangoe (talk) 17:45, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- If you can suggest what data can help prove the issue I can provide it. BilledMammal (talk) 02:00, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- 1) How many of Carlossuarez46’s articles have been deleted. I know the number is somewhere around 15-20k but it would be great to know for sure.
- 2) How many articles are cited to GNS only.
- 3) How many to GNS and a census only. Could be the Iranian census if we need to identify one. FOARP (talk) 06:51, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- I would add to this also articles sourced indirectly to GNS indirectly through some other source that gets its data from there.
- I know Maplandia is one, and there are currently ~4000 articles that use it as a source, there are probably others. Giulio 08:59, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- IIRC the Somali articles were all cited to Geonames, which is a GNS mirror. Mangoe (talk) 17:45, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- Articles cited to GNS or mirrors only. There are 3625, but I think there should be more - could there be some common mirrors I am missing? BilledMammal (talk) 05:41, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Articles cited to the Polish census and GNS only. There are 309, but again I think there should be more - we have 60,000 town and village articles using this as a source. Regarding how many articles have been deleted, it's hard to get data on deleted articles, but I'll see what I can do. BilledMammal (talk) 05:52, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Partially fixed, now 4054 and 322. I missed jstor in the one source template.
- I still think I'm missing something though, I'll keep looking. BilledMammal (talk) 06:04, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- I've also seen tageo, google maps, geonames and places-in-the-world which I suspect also get a lot of data from GNS. See for example Abanayop and Lombong Giulio 09:10, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- If you can suggest what data can help prove the issue I can provide it. BilledMammal (talk) 02:00, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- ...and now we have the "post offices imply there's a town" argument again, because people weigh in without any experience with the stuff. That's the biggest issue: when we started out, it seemed these national listings had to be reliable, and now that we've learned all the reasons why they have greater or lesser inaccuracies, getting people to acknowledge that those of us who've been dealing with them have learned a great deal that outsiders do not yet know is an endless process. A lot of the proof simply is in the process: we've put up probably a few thousand GNIS-based articles so far, and the deletion rate on these is quite high, and probably a lot of the redirect outcomes wouldn't survive a challenge at RfD. We had to resort to extreme measures to deal with Kotbot and the abadis because they were beyond what individual review processes could handle. By contrast deletion discussions of historic places are relatively rare, and are usually parish churches or embassies without anything to back up their noteworthiness. This strongly suggests that the historic listing guideline is OK and that the town/settlement guideline is not. Mangoe (talk) 18:01, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- On a related issue, articles like Ascandiandalis. Natural History (Pliny) is not a reliable source, and CS46 was so careless in the creation of this article that they managed to copy the name wrong - it's actually Ascandalis. See Quarry:query/106878. BilledMammal (talk) 06:15, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
PROD of Kureh-ye Khosravi
(The notification to the editor who created the article showed up on my watchlist, cause I AfD'd or PROD'd an article of theirs before)
I looked up the town and found this: https://www.mindat.org/feature-23691.html
I don't know if that adds to notability, or gives clues where more sources may be found, which is why I haven't removed the PROD template. You seem to do a lot of GEO stuff, so I leave it up to you. TurboSuperA+[talk] 14:41, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
