Managing a conflict of interest

Information icon Hello, Bertinul. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page George Elliott Clarke, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. MediaKyle (talk) 21:09, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MediaKyle, duly noted, and thanks for briefing me, as I am a new editor to Wikipedia! Yes, I am professor Clarke's student, and you may indeed be right in warning me about conflicts of interest. However, my relationship with professor Clarke puts me in a unique position to note something until now unnoticed; the glaring errors and outdatedness of Clarke's Wikipedia page, which seems to not have been updated recently or with any consultation from Clarke himself. My task is now to do this myself. This inaccuracy is a bigger mistake in that Professor Clarke is a better archiver and record-keeper of his own work than anybody else I know. As such, I have access to firsthand records of every work he has published (not self-published, by the way, which is a glaring falsehood on his wikipedia page that has somehow gone uncorrected), his life, his indigenous ancestry, and his employment record. Because of this, I hope you will accompany me in my reworking of GEC's wikipedia page to make the facts correct and add important information which has been sorely lacking. Naturally, I will declare my relationship to Clarke each time I edit, if only to make clear why the information in my possession should take primacy over some of the inaccuracies listed on his article.
Maybe, in order to make the task of moderating my edits easier for you, I can do them section by section?
Please let me know!
Happy to work with you,

Hi there. I would be happy to help you with updating the article, but I strongly recommend you do not edit it directly. Wikipedia has a great deal of quirky rules around content and you introduced a lot of problems when you tried. Instead, you should post on Talk:George Elliott Clarke with a summary of what needs to be changed, with references to support the changes, and myself or another editor will take a look for you. If you are being directed to do this, I recommend you give this page a read. Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 13:38, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Alright MediaKyle,
Will do.

Hi MediaKyle,
I hope you've been well. I've suggested a good deal of edits on the article's Talk page, with sources, while disclosing my conflict of interest! Do you think you can start going through them to see what needs to be edited in the article?
