  • Comment: The Henry Stickmin Collection is subjected to WP:SALT following multiple deletion discussions: [1] [2]. Once primary sources are removed, there's little coverage about the games or series: IGN is an empty database entry, PC Gamer and TheGamer are brief trivial mentions; the iTechPost is the only thing close to in-depth coverage. Vast amounts of this article are uncited and the sourcing is not remotely close to substantiating the large amount of content; it is probably best to write from the ground up from available reliable sourcing in future. Henry Stickmin, often misspelled as Henry Stickman, is a series of indie point and click adventure games created by Marcus Bromander, known by his alias PuffsballUnited, and published by Innersloth. The series began as a series of free-to-play Adobe Flash games on Newgrounds. In 2020, the series was remastered and expanded in a proper release, The Henry Stickmin Collection, released on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.1‡ 1

The series was created by indie developer Marcus Bromander, under the pseudonym PuffballsUnited, who would later go on to co-found the video game developer InnerSloth. A majority of the series was created using Adobe Flash and were released on Newgrounds, though Completing the Mission was created using the Adobe AIR engine and saw release on Steam.

Gameplay

The franchise follows a stick figure protagonist called Henry Stickmin as he attempts to heist or escape protected and dangerous environments. The actions players do in the game are point-and-click, sometimes as a quick time event, in which a cutscene will play out those results. If an option fails, the player can retry and pick a different option.

Occasionally, multiple of the options presented will be successful, resulting in branching pathways that ultimately lead to separate endings. For instance, the beginning of Stealing the Diamond grants players the choice to "Bust In" or "Sneak In". Choosing the former will ensue a path that follows Henry attempting to violently breaks into the museum using a scooter, ultimately leading to beating the game "The Aggressive Way". Choosing the latter will then lead to a second branching pathway, in which players can either attempt to sneak into the building through the roof without being noticed, ultimately leading to beating the game "The Undetected Way", or attempt to sneak into the building on ground level without being noticed, ultimately leading to beating the game "The Epic Way". Bromander has stated that all endings are of equal canonicity.

History and development

On December 16, 2007, Bromander released Crossing the Pit on Newgrounds as his first ever interactive game. On August 27, 2008, Breaking the Bank was released, followed by the sequel Escaping the Prison on April 11, 2010. Unlike the previous games, Escaping the Prison has multiple pathways and multiple endings. The next game, Stealing the Diamond, was released on July 8, followed by Infiltrating the Airship on May 27, 2013 and Fleeing the Complex on November 12, 2015.

On January 4, 2017, Bromander announced The Henry Stickmin Collection: a remastered collection that would feature all five of the existing installments, as well as the brand-new sixth one; Breaking the Bank, which would be entirely remade from the ground up due to its age, while the other games would receive visual touch-ups. Due to the game's size, The Henry Stickmin Collection was planned for release on Steam, as opposed to Newgrounds like the previous installments.2

Marcus Bromander developed The Henry Stickmin Collection over the course of four years. Forest Willard, the original coder for the Henry Stickmin Adobe Flash games, returned to coding it. It was made with the Adobe AIR engine. Most of the audio was redone from the original flash games in order to avoid copyright infringement. The Henry Stickmin Collection was released for Windows via the Steam distribution platform on August 7, 2020.3

PuffballsUnited is the co-founder of video game developer InnerSloth. Certain elements from the Henry Stickmin series would later be adapted into Among Us. On March 31, 2021, The Toppat's Airship was added as the game's fourth playable map, referred to in-game as "The Airship".4

Breaking the Bank

The simplest and shortest of the games, released in 2008, shows Henry trying to break into a vault in the middle of a desert. The game features a singular selection screen, containing six choices: a shovel; explosive devices; a laser drill; a wrecking ball; a teleportation device; and an empty money bag to use as a disguise. Choosing any of the first five will result in failure, while choosing the disguise will result in success, as the bag is picked up by an unsuspecting bank employee and placed within the vault. However, as soon as Henry exits the bag, he accidentally triggers the bank's tripwires and is promptly arrested.

Escaping the Prison

Building off of the previous game's ending, Escaping the Prison follows Henry as he attempts to break out of jail. The game opens with Henry sitting in a cell room, when two guards give him a package, unaware that it contains various objects that he can use to attempt to break out.

This game introduces the concept of different endings as while some objects lead to failure, some result in unique ways that Henry can escape, such as stealthily slipping away or being freed by his attorney.

Stealing the Diamond

The game opens on footage of a news broadcast on television, in which a mayor declares the opening of an archeological museum. A massive diamond is visible at the center of the room, with text at the bottom of the broadcast describing its value as worth millions of dollars. The camera then pans out to Henry, now out of prison, who decides to steal it.

While Escaping the Prison had branching pathways, Stealing the Diamond is the first game in the series to contain a selection screen that leads to separate paths.

Infiltrating the Airship

Henry wakes up within a military helicopter, having been forcefully recruited by the government, who task him with using his criminal skills to infiltrate an airship owned by a criminal organization, known as the Toppat Clan, in order to find evidence that could be used in order to arrest them. The two military officers bring up his past criminal offenses from the previous three games, and offer that, should he succeed in helping them take down the Toppat Gang, they will drop all charges against him, and he will be let free. He is then introduced to Charles, the helicopter's pilot, who asks Henry how he would like to be deployed onto the ship, leading to a four-way split path.

The Toppat's airship would later be adapted into the game Among Us under the name "The Airship".4

Fleeing the Complex

The game5 opens with Henry strapped to a chair in the dark, as a warden, Dimitri Johannes Petrov, steps out of the shadows to tell Henry that he is going to be placed within a large-scale, maximum-security prison known as The Wall. He is then placed in a transfer cell, alongside another inmate by the name of Ellie Rose, and the player is given four options: "Boost Up"; "Charge Tackle"; "Wait for Transfer"; and "Play Dead".

If the player chooses "Boost Up" at the beginning, they will then face a split path in which they can choose to either assist Ellie and escape together or abandon her and progress forward. If the player chooses "Wait for Transfer" at the beginning, they will eventually encounter a split path in which they must choose to either phone the Toppat Clan or Charles to help with Henry's escape.

Completing the Mission

The final entry in the series, Completing the Mission was released in 2020 as a brand-new game part of The Henry Stickmin Collection.2 It is locked until the player has completed both Infiltrating the Airship and Fleeing the Complex. When booting up the game, it, as opposed to starting on an opening cutscene, prompts the player to choose which route they wish to play, all of which build off one ending from both of the previous two games. To do so, they must choose one ending from Infiltrating the Airship and one ending from Fleeing the Complex.

The majority of plotlines revolve around the Toppat Clan attempting to launch a rocket into space with the intent of establishing a space settlement that will assist in committing crimes and reduce the government's ability to interfere with them, though character roles and motives vary depending on which endings were selected.
