Robert D. McMullin was a politician in Arkansas who served in the Arkansas Senate in 1897. He was arrested May 15, 1897 after he shot at and barely missed Arkansas Gazette editor J. N. Smithee (James Newton Smithee), editor of the Smithee refused to apologize for editorials critical of McMullin.1
McMullin lived in Yell County, Arkansas.1 He represented the 8th District encompassing Yell and Logan counties.2
In 1897 the New York Times reported he fired point blank at an editor.3
Smithee was an officer in the Confederate Army and chaired the Arkansas Democratic Party for four years beginning in 1878. He ran for governor and was a public official.4 In 1878 Smither had been in a duel.5
